Activities in the Granja Escuela

The Allotment01-01-03.jpg (6244 bytes)

We have a plot of land reserved for the cultivation of fruit and vegetables.

Amongst the crops found in our Allotment feature:   tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, onions, cabbages, potatoes, etc.

Also, we are proud of the many species of trees on the Granja from which we gather oranges, mandarines, hazelnuts, medlars, pomegranates, apples, pears, olives, quinces, cherries, plums, apricots, nectarines, walnuts, and characteristically mediterranean crops  such as olives, grapes, figs and almonds.

Huerto 2.jpg (41643 bytes)

All the pupils who come to the farm school learn how we tend the garden through the following activities:01-01-02.jpg (11840 bytes)

  • Preparation of the soil for sowing: weeding, fertilization and forming the earth to guide water.
  • Sowing.
  • Irrigation of the crops by different methods:  by inundation and trickle-feed.
  • Harvesting.

The opportunity to perform these tasks is determined by the time of year.

The Animal Pens

cabra.jpg (15766 bytes)The pens comprise some two thousand square metres, completely enclosed and separate from the rest of the facilities.  Inside the pens are housed all types of domesticated animals:  hens, rabbits, goats, ducks, pigs, geese, etc.

The pupils are invited to participate in all aspects of caring for the animals on the farm school:  feeding the rabbits, goats, ducks, geese, pigs and other animals, collecting eggs laid by the hens, milking the goats, and mucking out.  Whilst they perform these tasks, the monitor responsible for the group explains the characteristics and habits of the animal in question.

The Stables

01-01-10.jpg (9109 bytes)

01-01-09.jpg (12853 bytes)Like the pens, the stables are separate from the rest of the facilities.  They are home to a pony, a donkey, and two horses for practicing horsemanship.  The area also has a riding school where children can be introduced to the sport, and learn about how the horses are tended for.  The smallest children can ride in a trap accompanied by a monitor.

Through these activities, the pupils learn about the processes by which food gathered naturally is transformed into what we find on our plates at home.
